Driving for Uber, Lyft or another ride-hailing company is a great way to earn a living or even make some extra cash on holiday weekends. While everything seems easy, convenient, and flawless, did you know that these companies do not provide full coverage for your vehicle if you get into an accident?

IMAGINE: You just finished dropping off a rider at their destination and you pull out of a lot or side of the road before you accept your next trip. The app is still on, but you have not accepted another fare yet. You pull up to a red light and someone rear-ends you, or worse, you rear-end someone else. During this time, known as “Period 1,” the ride-hailing driver will not be covered by his/her insurance company.

The driver will be responsible to pay for his/her own reparations and may also be responsible to pay for damages and reparations to the other driver’s car in the unfortunate circumstance s/he is at fault.

Here’s how it works

The ride-hailing company (Uber or Lyft) provides very limited insurance coverage during the time your ride-hailing app is turned on, but have not yet accepted a fare. Once you accept a trip and are transporting arider, you will have coverage under the commercial insurance policy from the Transportation Network Company (TNC) you drive for.

If you are an Uber or Lyft driver in California and do not have Ride-hailing insurance, you run a serious risk of not being sufficiently covered in the event of an accident while on the job.
